The UNCRC states that children and their families are entitled to help from the government if they are poor or in need, and that all children have a right to a standard of living that is good enough to meet their physical and mental needs. The government must ensure that those most at risk from poverty do not face exclusion, prejudice or any other form of disadvantage.

Local Government has a key role in helping families maximise their income through addressing financial inclusion, undertaking benefit take up activity, efficient benefits administration and tackling worklessness.
