I don't think it is just children from families where there is no one working that should be supported, as those parents who are in debt and working all hours, struggling to pay their debts are in a worse predicament as they do not have any help from anyone and of course the children suffer just as badly if not worse as there is no safety net for these children and their parents are out working to try and support themselves.

Support a recession survival and recovery package for families

There were 4 million UK children below the poverty line before the recession. In Wales 107,000 children now have no parent in work and the number of children in families having to survive on benefits has jumped by nearly 23% in just twelve months. Without action from the Government, many families will be sucked into debt at rates of interest they can never pay off.

Urgent support must ensure all families have enough money coming in to stay out of debt. Support like childcare, free school meals and the social fund must be increased so more families get the basic help needed to stay afloat. Barriers in the benefit system that prevent parents taking and keeping jobs that only offer short working hours must be removed.

We cannot afford to make the mistakes of previous recessions or we will face major social and economic costs in the years to come. Whether the economy is growing or shrinking, Britain’s wealth can still be shared more fairly to help end Britain’s child poverty shame and invest in our country’s main asset – our children.
