Elected Member area

All elected Members have a vital role to play in reducing child poverty in Wales and ensuring it remains a local political priority. This section is designed to provide practical support and useful resources for Members in contributing to this important agenda.

WLGA module

A training module, has been developed that provides Members with some key facts about child poverty. It provides information about how members can maximise their political role to ensure that local policy and strategy supports our common goal to halve child poverty by 2010 and eradicate child poverty by 2020.

Child poverty scrutiny guide

A scrutiny guide for members has also been developed, recognising the important role scrutiny plays in:

  • policy review and development,
  • monitoring performance,
  • holding the executive to account, and
  • involving the public.

The guide provides a framework for scrutinising this cross cutting issue, practical advice and contact details for expert witnesses. Involving children and young people within the scrutiny process can be challenging but it is possible and leads to better recommendations. The National Assembly's Children and Young People's Committee recently involved young people in thier scrutiny of child poverty.
