Evidence base

Detailed local data demonstrating the incidence of child poverty related problems helps to:

  • develop a shared understanding of the need for action
  • set a baseline against which to measure change
  • decide priorities and develop action.

Often, quantitative data on child poverty is not collected at a local level, and therefore is not available e.g. benefit take up. Qualitative data from stakeholders and the press can be useful if this is the case. As a part of the children and young people’s plan, partnerships will have produced needs assessments which may have the information you require. In addition Stats Wales and Department for Works and Pensions hold data on various topics. The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) report “measuring success” provides a framework for the types of indicators you may wish to use. In addition WAG are developing a "well being monitor" for children and young people that will have up to date local indicators.

The indicators page sets out the type of useful information that could be available locally, and where to get it.
