Practicalities 'continued

When working with children and young people two of the most important, and possibly, most daunting aspects are issues to do with Health and Safety and Child Protection. It is important to understand your duties and responsibilities with regards to these issues in order to protect the children and young people you are working with, and also to protect yourself.

In the Wellbeing, Health and Safety section, you will find policies and procedures used by Save the Children that you can use or adapt to fit your situation. There are also useful templates of risk assessments and event checklists, which you help you to make sure you have covered everything when starting work with children and young people.

Child protection is vital when working with children and young people. You might be able to work with existing groups and with experienced workers so that they can take the lead on these issues. If you organise things yourself it is essential that you understand your role and know what procedures to follow. Included in this section is a basic guide to child protection, explaining the responsibilities, procedures and terms telling you what you need to know for working with children and young people. Child protection issues should not put you off working with children and young people but it's important that you are aware of it at all times when working with children and young people. You can get support and guidance from your Local Authority Social Services department, who should answer any questions you have.
